Employee Relation : Involvement of Trade Unions


Employee relation Management

Employee relations are managed by the human resource department of a company. To overcome the conflicts, HR must implement continuous changes to manage the growing workforce. To reduce the number of disagreements, we can focus on the following skills.

Interpersonal Skills: This entails implementing a proper communication method, as this is the first step in avoiding conflict. Most issues can be resolved through effective communication between employees and employees. 

Conflict Management: Identifying the core of the conflict and providing a solution that benefits both parties is the main purpose. To accomplish this, management must improve their negotiating skills.

Employee relation and Trade union

In every organization, there are problems regarding management and employee relations, such as salary negotiations, dealing with employment policies, employee entitlements, and communicating with employees. Employees approach trade unions or any other approaches to work on and solve issues like this (Armstrong, 2009). The wages and benefits negotiated by the union are higher than the wages and benefits of non-union workers.

Trade Unions are groups of people who gather the interests/welfares of their employees against the organization that may look for ways to succeed with the employees' involvement  (Deakin & Morris, 2012).

The trade union of the Teachers Association and the present government is having disputes. Teachers the association is always requesting solutions for the problems they have and the government and relevant parties do not listen to them and asking to continue to work. Seems both the parties are always against each other, where innocent children pay for their punishments. 

Currently, the teachers have started a picketing campaign against the government due to these disputes.

According to records in Sri Lanka, more of trade unions act on behalf of the government employees, but they are unable to provide the best outcomes when compared to private sector trade unions . The main flaws in Sri Lanka's government sector are a lack of communication and negotiation skills on both sides.

Summarize


Negotiating labor relations is a complicated and regulated process. However, when an HR professional is able to reach a strong agreement with the union, it demonstrates how important HR is to the organization's success.

  1. Argumentative topic. In SL there are over 2000 registered trade unions , out 60% are involved in public sector. However, studies says the total employees covered by these TUs are 10% of total work force. It is very argumentative that the fair benefits of TUs could be distributive with this participation ? . Moreover, Public sector TUs are bias to the political parties and aligned with the political agendas than employee welfare. Hence it is proved that re-assessment is needed for the TU relations in SL.

  2. Contemporary important topic Umesh. The history of trade unionism in Sri Lanka dates back to 1890s when the first formal organization of employees emerged. With the enactment of the Trade Unions Ordinance in 1935 employees got the opportunity to legally register their trade union. However, since then politicization and multiplicity have crippled the entire trade union movement. The desire of the political parties to popularize their political agenda and the loopholes in the legal framework on trade unions as the two most significant causes for this situation. The evidence also proves that multiplicity is significant in the public sector than in the private sector.

  3. Every organization’s HR Department must aware of the changing face of unions. At one point in time, unions were less diversified and negatively perceived. That is no longer the case. Union plays the huge role inside the organization. So it is important to know about their action plans , mission and the tasks.

The principal purpose of a trade union is to regulate employee relations with an employer via collective bargaining, It is true that Trade union play great role in safeguarding employees from any form of discrimination or harassment in organisations (Moeti-Lysson, 2011). But importantly members of the trade unions must ensure whether their leaders genuinely act towards their benefit instead of being a invisible hands of other agendas.   6. Employee Unions always stands for the employee rights and they fight on behalf of them. Unions always negotiate with higher management regarding the betterment of employees. But in recent history of Sri Lanka Unions act under the influence of Political parties and sometimes they don't act behalf of employees.

  7. The role played by trade unions in uniting, protecting and improving the employees has a positive impact on the business in order to maintain good relationship with the employees. Trade unions have also started various training and development activities which is helping new comers to get used to the work conditions in the company. As a result, workers are more aware of the rules and policies in the company and improve productivity. But still there are weak point as well when it comes to disputes.

  8. Trade unions play great role in safeguarding employees from any form of discrimination or harassment in organizations. Employees need to work in good environment. The formation of trade union structure began as discussion groups formed into professional organizations which has the functions like negotiating for better wages, working hours, and working conditions (Glennis, 2005).

  9. Every organization in Sri Lanka practices trade unionization. But I don't believe that; they are aware of their job responsibilities.
    In any company, we see certain employees who support socialism and try to solve their problems; in these cases, employment relations grudges develop, which is unsuitable for both the employer and the employees. In my opinion, trade unions should discuss specific issues such as employee welfare but should not be involved in decision-making.

  10. A trade unions are understood as organizations of workers that act as a collective force in efforts to safeguard and cater to their common interests by making use of collective bargaining methods. Workers are joined together to
    achieve goals in areas such as wages and working conditions. They negotiates contracts and conditions with employers, keeping employee satisfaction high and protecting workers from unsafe or unfair working conditions.
    In Sri Lanka most of the public trade unions are controlled by the political parties and they work for their own political benefits and not for the workers.
